Remember I asked you in the last newsletter what you liked to know more about? Quite a few of you got back to me and I noticed that there's a really strong interest in inspiration and the creative process. I love that!
Coincidentally, just a week ago, a friend sent me the question "Why are you creative?". There was no further text in the email, just this one line. To be honest, I was taken aback a bit. When you start thinking about the "Why", it forces you to look at the bigger picture. That can be daunting!
My response was,
Creativity is like sexuality. You don't choose it, it chooses you. We all live hoping we have a purpose in life, I choose to seek it through creativity.
Later that day I came across a beautiful quote by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a Cuban-born visual artist, who also intertwined creativity with purpose:
Above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art.
Now, you may know that I don't see creativity as something which is limited to visual artists or writers. For me, it's about having the courage to live according to your own standards. Creative thinking has a lot to do with allowing yourself to see and do things differently. That isn't always as easy as it sounds...
This brings me to my latest work of interactive art, which is called "12 Truths, a Positivity Project". The idea stems from the Take What You Need signs I wrote about a few weeks ago.
What happened was, there's a new artisan ice cream store in Munich, called True&12. They saw my signs on Instagram and they loved them! So, I hung one sign on their store window which was emptied of all its tags within a few days. I made another sign the following week, which went even faster! Thus, bit by bit, it grew into a fun little project.
The idea is that I'll hang a "12 Truths" sign on the store window of True&12 each week, for twelve weeks in total (spot a pattern?). Each sign will communicate twelve positive truths which are meant to surprise, delight and empower you. At the bottom of this newsletter you'll find a link to a webpage with pictures of all the current signs.
Sometimes, a little nudge like that can set a much bigger shift in motion. Or it's the bit of unexpected kindness that can change a person's day for the better. It's a project in process and if you have any ideas about it, get in touch. I appreciate your opinion.
Now before I end this newsletter I want to guide you to a time-lapse video I made of the last 12 Truths sign. Have a look, it's only 1 minute long: watch time-lapse
